Hasinai
Summer Youth Camp 2006
This year, the Hasinai Summer Youth Camp was held from 25 June to
1
July 2005 at the tribal complex in Binger. This year, we
had approximately 50 campers and youth leaders -- our biggest camp ever!
The campers started arriving Sunday
afternoon and everyone pitched their tents and camped out at
the tribal dance ground all week. The weather was perfect and for the
first year in a long time, we didn't have any thunderstorms! Classes
started bright and early
Monday morning and included archery, pottery, and beadwork.
ARCHERY

Instructor Kay O'Neal taught archery to our campers.
STICKBALL GAME

Always a favorite among the campers, stickball was supervised by Alice
Barrientez.
POTTERY

Under the instruction of Tracy Newkumet and with the assistance of
Jackie Angerbauer, our campers made some fabulous Caddo pottery.
The campers visited the Caddo Heritage Museum to see examples of both
prehistoric and contemporary Caddo pottery.
Later their creations were pit-fired in the traditional way by Tracy
and her husband Derek Burrows.
BEADWORK

Alice not only watched over our stick ball players, she also taught
beadwork.
Our campers produced some very nice work!
DUSH-TOOHS

Our girls worked hard on their dush-toohs in order to have them ready
by the dance at the close of camp.
As you can see from the group photo, they did a very fine job!
SINGING AND DANCING

Each evening our boys worked hard on learning Caddo songs under the
instruction of Jimmy Reeder...
...while the girls put on their shawls and learned the Caddo
dances.
THE BIG DANCE

On our last evening together, we all got ready for
our final dance.

While the boys sang, the girls danced.
All of our campers had a chance to demonstrate how much they had
learned during the week,
as well as show off their new dush-toohs, beadwork, and camp t-shirts.
Campers also received certificates signed by Shirley Gouge, camp
organizer, and LaRue Parker, Chairperson of the Caddo Nation.

One last picture of our beautiful young ladies!
The Hasinai Youth Camp is funded largely by donations and the
hard work of many volunteers, including Diana Woodward, Patty Balloun,
Kay O'Neal, Alice Barrientez, Tracy Newkumet, Derek Burrows, Jason
Jackson, Jimmy Reeder, Diane Sparks, Charlotte Bentley, Jackie
Angerbauer, Bobby Gonzalez, Shelby Howery, and Shirley Gouge.
The organizers would like to extend a
HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in and attended the fund
raisers we held throughout the year in support of the camp. We would
also like to acknowledge the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National
Endowment for the Arts for their support of this event.
The Youth Camp is held each summer near the end of June. All
